Roofing Cost Parameter Definitions

Roof Area - To estimate your roof area first determine the size of your home or home addition's footprint, e.g. length and width. Next, determine your home's roof pitch (rise over run). Then determine how far your roof eaves overhang the exterior walls of your home. Finally, remember back to your geometry days and Pythagorean's Theorem (a2 + b2 = C2). With this basic information you can calculate your roof area.

For example, if you have a 26 foot long home addition that is 24 wide, with a 12/12 roof pitch, and has 1 foot roof eaves, your roof area would be:

  • Roof Area = 2 x [ [the Square root of (122 x 122)]+1]   x 26]

    • Where there are 2 roof halves, 1 foot roof eave, and home addition is 26 feet long.

Wall Flashing - Measure the length of roof line edge that abuts an adjoining exterior wall.

Chimney Flashing - Measure the length of the roof line edge that abuts a fireplace.

Drip Edge - Measure the length of the roof line edge that does not abut a wall or chimney edge.

Ice and Water Shield - Measure the length of the roof line edge plus any roof valleys and near chimneys.

Ridge Vent - Measure the length of the roof peak, e.g. 26 feet in the example above, and subtract 2 feet.

Soffit Vent - Measure the length of roof line edge associated with roof eaves.

Pipe Vent - Count the number of vent pipe stacks existing the chimney.

Remove old Shingles - Do you want to remove the old shingles or not. It is highly recommend that old roof shingles be removed for maintaining new shingle warranties.
