Latest Happenings
This month’s newsletter features two new tool reviews, a new
Bostitch Finish Nailer and a DeWalt Chalk Reel, both highly useful for the
professional carpenter and the DIY homeowner. I also wrote several knew articles
on a variety of topics including installing drywall and skip troweling ceilings,
planning a kitchen remodel, and the benefits of finishing a basement. I also
revisited and updated a couple of previous pieces I wrote on the use of Mahogany
wood decking and making sure to check for Radon gas in the home, both of which I
think you’ll find of interest.
Bostitch BTFP72155 Finish Nailer Review Video
One of the best tools to have when doing finish carpentry work on a house is a
finish nailer. I recently received from the local UPS driver a new finish nailer
from Bostitch to test drive. The particular model I received was the BTFP72155
Finish Nailer, a 15 gauge angled nailer that shoots “DA” style finish nails and
supports nail lengths from 1-1/4 to 2-1/2 inches. [Read On and Watch the Video]
DeWalt DWHT47144 Chalk Reel Review Video
Whether you’re a professional home construction trades person, or a do it
yourself homeowner with major home remodeling plans, one tool you can’t go
without is a chalk reel. I recently acquired one of their new chalk reel kits,
the DWHT47144, and was extremely impressed with its design, strong construction
and ease of use. Like all of the marking products in the family, the DWHT47144
has a smooth and quiet operating helical gear system. [Read On and Watch the

How to Install and Tape and Mud Drywall
Over the course of owning several homes, and tackling many major renovation
projects on them, I have had to install drywall on a number of occasions. In
addition, besides just installing the drywall, I have also done the associated
drywall taping and mudding tasks. The paragraphs that follow in this article
provide detailed instructions on how to install drywall, as well as how to tape
and mud like the pros. [Read On]
How to Skip Trowel a Ceiling
After drywalling a room or home one of the very next things that should be done
is to finish the ceilings. When it comes to finishing a ceiling there are a
number of options that you can choose from. The simplest one is to simply prime
and paint the ceiling with a flat paint. It’s easy to do and costs very little.
The second option is to apply a popcorn textured ceiling. You can typically have
a drywall contractor spray it on after they finish the drywall project or you
can do it yourself using a paint roller. But there’s a better alternative call
Skip Troweling. [Read On]
Planning a Kitchen Remodel
Making the decision to remodel a kitchen is often one of the best investments a
homeowner can make. The kitchen is where families spend much of their waking
hours when at home. Kitchens are where people cook, eat, and gather with other
family members to discuss the day’s events. As a result of being the center
point of homes, most prospective homebuyers highly value remodeled or renovated
kitchens. Consequently, kitchen renovations rank high on the ROI home
improvement list. [Read On]
Benefits of Finishing a Basement and How to Plan Properly
Converting an empty and dreary basement into a finished living space is a great
way to increase the value of a home at an affordable price. Finishing a
basement, on a cost per square foot basis, is cheaper than building an addition
onto the side of a home or even finishing an attic. In most cases a finished
basement also offers the ability to create more finished living space than
either of those two alternatives. [Read On]
Mahogany Wood Decking
Many years ago now I toured several newly built Adirondack homes in the lakes
region of New Hampshire. I was in the early planning stages of building my
vacation home on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire and wanted to get some
construction ideas for it. One of the key features that stood out to me while
touring the homes were their decks. In every case they were built out of
Mahogany wood. Both the decking and the rail systems. Besides looking very well
constructed the dark reddish color Mahogany wood had a unique character and
beauty about it that I immediately fell in love with. [Read On]
Radon Gas and Lung Cancer
Radon gas in homes is a serious concern. According to a number of scientific
reports Radon gas is the second leading cause of Lung Cancer. Only the
inhalation of tobacco products rates higher in causing Lung Cancer. It is
believed that Radon gas is predominately more dangerous to children, smokers and
occupants who spend much of their time inside their homes. When purchasing a
home make sure to have it tested for Radon gas. If you already own your home and
have never had it tested for Radon gas you should do so immediately. [Read On]
