Tips on How to Prevent Ice and Snow Damage to your Above Ground Pool

Winters in New Hampshire can be fierce. In some winters its not uncommon to get 3 feet of snow over just a few days. This year I was unable to keep up with raking the snow off of our above ground pool due to the shear quantity of it and the frequency of the snow storms.

To make matters worse, the nylon tarp pool cover was tied down to the top edge of the pool via a heavy gauge wire line.

When the liner tore from either the weight of the snow pushing down on it, or the 18″ thick disk of ice that blanketed the top surface of the pool (underneath the pool cover) rubbing against the liner, the pool cover wire wound up pulling in the top edges of the pool as the water drained from the pool.

Unfortunately the pool damage could have been avoided. In 12 years of owning the pool we never had this type of catastrophic failure. The main reason was that I religiously raked off the snow from the top surface of the pool in previous years.

By raking the snow off of the pool cover I eliminated pressure on the pool and pool cover. Also, if I had used either clips or water filled milk jugs to hold the pool cover on, when the liner broke the pool cover would have sunk into the pool, but not have pulled in the sides of the pool.

How the pool use to look.

So if you have an above ground pool and live in a cold climate make sure to keep up with the pool cover snow removal and fasten the pool cover with a method or solution that will allow it to give if water drains from the pool.
