How Long to Install a New Roof

Roof Construction and New Roofing Installation Should be able to be Completed in Less than a Week in Most Cases

By Mark J. Donovan

Your home’s roof is one of the most vital components of your home. The roof protects the home and its occupants from rain, snow, ice and wind. It also plays a major role in providing structural integrity to the home. The roof ties together all of the exterior walls.

Consequently when building a roof it is important that it is built properly and is structurally sound. Part of the equation in determining the type of roof, the roof pitch, and the size and location of roof trusses and/or roof rafters and joists is the local climate. Northern areas where there is large annual snow falls require heavier duty roof construction.

The actual time required to install a new roof is dependent upon two major factors, carpenter skills and weather conditions. In addition, roofing materials need to be on the job site for roof construction to occur. This may sound like an obvious thing, however many times construction materials don’t show up on the job site when planned or expected, thus dragging out or delaying the roof construction.

In general, for a standard colonial or ranch home, with no hips or valleys, a roof can be framed out and sheathed in just a few days. If it’s a hip roof, or a roof that has multiple ridge lines and/or valleys, and/or dormers, the roof construction could take a week or more.

In regards to installing a new roof as it relates to shingling it, skilled roofing contractors can shingle an entire home, such as a colonial or ranch style home, in a couple of days. If old shingles need to be removed first, then an additional day may be required. In addition, if after removing the old shingles roof sheathing or rafter damage is observed then one or two additional days may be required to install the new roof.

Never put off installing a new roof if you observe cupping, fishmouthing, or cracking roof shingles. These are all clear signs that it’s time to install a new roof.

Delaying the installation of a new roof with these types of conditions is a recipe for major water damage to the interior of your home. It can also mean the slow decay and rot of roof framing members.
