How to Dethatch a Lawn Video

The Benefits of Dethatching a Lawn and How to Adjust a Rear Pull Lawn Dethatcher Attachment

By Mark J. Donovan

Mark Donovan of HomeAdditionPlus.com explains how to dethatch a lawn and discusses how to adjust a pull behind lawn dethatcher.

Over time a thick layer of grass clippings can build up at the base of a lawn. This build up is known as thatch and after a period of time it can become so thick that oxygen, water and nutrients can not reach the grass roots.

Consequently, periodically a lawn should be dethatched to remove the thatch. After dethatching a lawn with a dethatcher the loose thatch should be raked up. Then the lawn can be overseeded, fertilized and watered.

A rear pull lawn dethatcher should be set so that the tines sit about 1/4 to 1/2 inch above the ground, and the dethatcher wheels are in contact with the ground. This way the tines can lift the thatch up from the soil base without ripping up the living grass roots.
