Transom Window Types and Benefits
Transom Windows Provide Natural Lighting, Privacy and Security
By: Mark J. Donovan

|
Transom windows, as their name suggests, sit above the transom, or header
beam, that is located just above a door or window. Transom windows have been
around for centuries and were used to help provide, or pass through, additional
sunlight throughout the home.
Transom windows are often observed as stationary windows that are used to
complement other windows, such as casement windows and double-hung windows. In
addition, transom windows are often used as accent windows above both exterior
and interior doors.
|
Transom windows are commonly used with sidelights, vertical window panels, to
provide overhead and side natural lighting around an exterior doorway entrance.
Transom windows are also found over garage doors to provide natural light into
the garage.
|
|
Besides providing additional natural
light, transom windows also help to make a room or home feel larger. In
addition, transom windows are available in a variety of shapes, such as
rectangular, semi-circle, and fan shaped. They are also available in almost any
size imaginable, and with different types of glass, including stained glass
patterns. Consequently transom windows can also help to define a room in terms
of aesthetics and design.
Transom windows are also available in
fixed or opening styles. Opening transom windows offer the added benefit of
providing air circulation in the home.
|
| Typically they are hinged at either the top or bottom of the
window. Fixed transom windows, are classically used for decorative and
accent pieces around exterior doors and consequently are available in a wide
variety of window glaze types and frame patterns. Frequently they have
multiple panes. Other transom window benefits include providing natural
privacy and security, while still allowing light to enter the home or room.
Due to the fact that a transom window is placed high over a doorway
entrance, for example, privacy is maintained while still providing natural
light into the home and/or room. In addition, with a transom window, the
door can remain closed and locked for security reasons, while still allowing
light to enter the home. |
