Shrink Wrap Windows to Reduce Cold Air Drafts

Enjoy a Warmer Home this Winter by Installing Window Shrink Wrap

By Mark J. Donovan

Older windows are major areas of heat loss during winter months. If your home has old windows that are drafty, consider shrink wrapping your windows for the winter season.

There are a number of manufacturers that sell window shrink wrap kits that enable homeowners to quickly shrink wrap and seal their windows.

To shrink wrap a window start by thoroughly cleaning the window and window frame.

It is important to remove all the dust and dirt from the window and window frame to enable the 2-way adhesive tape to stick well on the window frame.

After you have cleaned the window and window frame thoroughly, measure, cut and apply the two way tape that came in the window shrink wrap kit to the perimeter of the window frame.

Next, cut a section of plastic shrink wrap material approximately two inches wider and longer than the distances between the upper and lower tape pieces, and the side-to-side tape pieces. It is important to have about 1 inch of excess window shrink wrap material around the perimeter of the tape pieces to allow you some flexibility when attaching it to the tape.

Now, starting at the top of the window, press the piece of window sheet wrap up against the two way tape.

Then work towards the sides of the window and attach the shrink wrap to the side tape pieces. Finally, press the shrink wrap against the bottom tape section.

Once you have completed pressing the shrink wrap onto the window frame, use a hair dryer to shrink the wrap. Hold the hair drier approximately 4-6 inches away from the shrink wrap and make sure you wave the hair dryer over the entire piece of shrink wrap. As the shrink wrap warms up the wrinkles will fade away until the shrink wrap is drum tight.
