Installing Window Handles

How to Install a Window Handle on a Double Hung Replacement Window

By: Mark J. Donovan

When installing some Anderson double hung replacement windows a couple of years ago, I was surprised to see that the window hardware, and more specifically the window handles did not already come pre-mounted to the lower window sashes. Consequently I found myself having to install window handles on the double hung windows after I installed the windows.

Though installing window handles is fairly easy, it is important to do it right the first time. Otherwise you will end up with unwanted holes in your window sashes.

To install window handles first measure the width of the bottom window sash and divide by two to find the horizontal center point. Make a small pencil mark roughly half way up the bottom window sash at the horizontal center point.

Next, measure the height of the bottom window sash and divide by two to find the vertical center point. Again, make a small pencil mark on the bottom window sash so that the horizontal and vertical pencil marks line up to make crosshairs.

This is your center point for installing your window handle.

Now remove the window handle from the packaging. While unpacking the window handle, look for a paper template. If there is one, locate the center of the template over the crosshair pencil marks that you placed on the double hung window sash.

Next, use a small nail or screw to dimple the window sash wood at the two screw locations on the template.

Remove the paper template and then simply fasten the window handle onto the window sash using the small screws that came with the window handle. The screws should be placed where the dimples were made in the window sash.

If a paper template did not come with the window handle, line up the center of the window handle with the pencil crosshairs on the window sash. Again, dimple the window sash at the screw-hole locations on the window handle using a small nail or screw.

Now fasten the window handle onto the window sash using the small screws, again locating the screws over the dimpled locations.

With the screws firmly tightened, test opening the double hung window by lifting up on the window handle.
