Cleaning Window Screens
Don’t forget to Clean the Window Screens
when Washing Windows this Season

For many homeowners spring
and fall seasons are common times for sprucing up the home, both
inside and outside. One major task typically includes cleaning
windows. For those who have tilt-in windows the work can all be done
in the comfort of the home. For those without tilt-in windows,
cleaning windows means pulling out the ladder and traipsing all around
the exterior of the house with it. One frequent part of the job,
however, that many forget to do is to clean the window screens. |
Dirty window screens can account for
much of the poor visibility out your windows. Cleaning window screens is easy to
do, and for those who don’t have tilt-in windows, half the work is already done
by removing the screens to get to the windows.

Cleaning window screens is simple to
do, and requires just a sponge, soap, a bucket of warm water, and a hose. A
pressure washer can also help make the job go a little faster.
To clean window screens, first rinse
down the screen using your water hose. Then gently rub down the screen with a
large sponge and a mixture of warm soapy water. I use a dish detergent for the
soap. |
After lathering up the window screen,
tap it gently on the bottom side rail with the palm of your hand to help loosen
up any hard to remove debris.
Finally, rinse the screen with clean
water and allow the screen time to dry before reinstalling.
Cleaning Window
Screens with a Pressure Washer
A pressure washer is a great
alternative to a sponge for cleaning window screens, however you need to take
some precautions to prevent from damaging them.

If you plan to use a pressure washer
for cleaning window screens, make sure you use the lowest pressure washer
adapter. In addition, make sure not to hold the pressure washer nozzle too close
to the window screen. Hold the pressure washer wand several feet away from the
window screen prior to pulling the pressure washer wand trigger. You can then
slowly move the pressure washer wand closer to the window screen as you judge
the force of water hitting it.
So don’t forget to clean your window
screens when washing your windows. All too often, half the reason windows look
dirty is the pollen and other debris that is lodged in the window screens.
Cleaning window screens is simple to do, and will dramatically enhance the
views out your windows.
