How to Clean Ceramic Tile Grout

A Few Simple Methods for Cleaning Tile Grout

By Mark J. Donovan

Whether it’s a kitchen tile floor, bathroom tile, or entryway tile floors, ceramic tile grout always gets dirty and needs periodic cleaning. If it’s not the grease and food stains in the kitchen, it is the mold and mildew in the bathroom or the traipsed in dirt in the main entranceway. All can, and do, dirty tile grout. When cleaning ceramic tile grout it is always best to use the least corrosive cleaning solution possible to avoid damaging the grout.

Before beginning the task of cleaning ceramic tile grout it is always important to first put on hand and eye protection.

In addition, never mix chemical products as they could produce toxic fumes that could endanger you.

To clean ceramic tile grout start out with water and a stiff bristle plastic brush. Also try applying a baking soda paste, or a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water. Each of these solutions can remove simple stains from tile grout.

If your grout stains are tougher, then use an off the shelf household cleaning product to clean the ceramic tile grout. Many of these products can do a fine job while not adversely impacting the grout.

If off-the-shelf household cleaning products are inadequate for cleaning your tile grout, then step up to specific ceramic tile grout cleaning products. Look for products that are non-acidic and have a balanced PH level. Acidic cleaning products will eat away at tile grout, which is something you really want to stay away from, unless you have eventual plans to replace the ceramic tile grout.

If commercial ceramic tile grout cleaning products are insufficient then you may want to consider replacing the tile grout altogether.

After cleaning the ceramic tile grout, be sure to apply a grout sealer over the grout to help maintain its new appearance longer.
