How To Fit Slipcovers

If your couch looks like it’s seen better days – perhaps the upholstery is tatty, faded or just plain ugly or outdated – then fitting a slipcover over the top is an easy and inexpensive way to give it a fresh new look.  Furniture covers are designed to be fully removable for washing and they’re simple to put on in only a few minutes.  They’re generally made from durable fabrics such as cotton, polyester, or a blend of these.  Stretch slipcover fabrics that include a small amount of Spandex are a popular option as they’re good at providing a tight, smooth fit.

When it comes to improving the appearance of old furniture, slipcovers are an affordable choice, costing under $100 for a sofa slipcover.

Ready made slipcovers come in a variety of sizes designed to fit most standard sized seats, such as sofas, loveseats and arm chairs.  However, as all furniture is different, there are a few things you can do to make sure you get a perfect fit and get your furniture looking as good as new. Here are some common problems and tips on how to overcome them:

Slipcover Quickly Becomes Untucked

If you find you’re left with a lot of loose fabric when you fit your slipcover, or it quickly becomes untucked if anyone sits on your sofa, then a handy solution is to use special plastic grips to hold you slipcover securely in place.  You’ll need to tuck the spare material into the crevices along the back and sides of your seat cushion to get a tidy fit, as you usually would.  Then you simply insert the grips into the crevices to stop the fabric from becoming untucked.

Slipcover Doesn’t Fit On The Arms

Another common problem people have when fitting slipcovers is that they find a standard sized slipcover is too big on the arms.  This especially happens with furniture with wooden arms or ones that are just narrower than standard.  This issue can be overcome by a visit to your local craft store.  By wrapping polyester batting over the arms to give them extra padding, you should be able to achieve a good snug fit.  Polyester batting can also be used over furniture that has piping that you don’t want to show through.

Slipcover Becomes Loose On Leather Sofa

Seats covered with leather or similar shiny upholstery can be problematic to cover, as the slippery surface often causes slipcovers to slide about and work loose.  The answer is to lay a non-skid rug pad, cut to size, over your seat cushions before fitting a slipcover over the top.

Slipcover Won’t Fit Over Loose Back Cushions

You will probably have difficulty getting a slipcover to fit if your sofa or loveseat is the type that has loose back cushions.  Most ready made covers aren’t constructed to stretch over the cushions as well as the seat back.  The way to get a slipcover to fit in this situation is to remove the back cushions all together, fit the slipcover and then place new pillows along the seat back instead – you are trying to give your furniture a new image after all!
