You are excited about building your new home, the place of your dreams. There are so many options to choose from when working with the architect on a custom home or working with the builder in a subdivision. One important aspect of your new home is the lighting. Lighting can set the mood or tone for each room of a house or the theme of the entire house. You can select the individual light fixtures for each room plus even decide where light switches should be placed. |
Designer Christopher Lowell achieved fame for stage lighting and has expanded his career to include home lighting as well. Lowell has a web site where he explains the types of lighting that are appropriate for a home. The principles of good home lighting need to be incorporated into a home during the planning stages. According to Lowell, it is important to pay attention to the function of light in a room and to the effect the light creates rather than simply focus on light fixtures.

There are several different types of lights that can be installed in a room and each has different requirements. There are four categories of lights: ceiling lights, natural light, up-lights, and mid-range lights. Ceiling lights are the typical fixtures that hang in the middle of a room or they may be recessed. Natural light is the light from outdoors that enters the room through windows or skylights. Up-lights are like a spotlight that is placed on the floor. |
Finally, mid-range lights are table lamps or other lighting that illuminates an area of a room.
Since up-lights sit on the floor and must be plugged into an outlet,
they are typically located in the corner of a room. Up-lights add
ambiance to the corner. An example of the use of an up-light is to
place this type of spotlight behind a large potted plant.
In the ceiling light category, there are hanging lights or recessed
lights. Recessed ceiling lights are typically found in bedrooms,
living rooms, dens, entry areas, and basements. These areas usually
require additional light sources besides the recessed lighting to
set the right tone. Some people like recessed ceiling lights. If you
wish to add recessed ceiling lights to your home, it is best to make
that decision during the planning stage.
The other kind of ceiling light hangs in either the middle of the
room or a corner. A ceiling light rarely provides enough lighting to
adequately brighten a room. Since most hanging lights are in a
dining room, new home plans usually automatically identify wiring to
this area of the ceiling.
Natural lighting enters the room through windows or skylights. The
placement, number, and size of the windows has a great impact on the
daytime mood and lighting of a room. If you are designing a custom
home, pay particular attention to the natural lighting.
Lamps, or mid-range lighting, require electric outlets. New homes
today provide more outlets per room than older homes. But it is
still a good idea to check that there are enough outlets for lamps
in each room, especially bedrooms. If you'd like more information
