How to Reject a Building Contractor Bid
What to Say to the non-winning Building
Contractor
By Mark J. Donovan

Question: I am in the
process of getting ready to start a new room addition project and recently got several
building contractor bids. I have already selected one of the contractors for the
project. My dilemma is how do I tell the other building contractors that they
did not win the project. A couple of the contractors just did not meet my
criteria for the project. Two other contractors were very pleasant and nice to
deal with, however one of them had a significantly higher priced bid and the
other one only started his business a year ago.

I do not know how to tell the
non-winning contractors that I have rejected their bid for my room addition
project. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Answer:
First, when it comes to your money
and your home you have to make decisions solely on what is right for you and
your family.
Second, you don't have to tell the
non-winning contractors that do not meet your criteria why you are not hiring
them. Just thank them for their time and effort, and let them know you have made
your decision to go with another contractor. Try to leave it at that. If they
push for reasons, limit what you say. If you feel compelled to respond to them,
talk at a high level on why you chose another building contractor, e.g. pricing,
schedule reasons.

Do not go down the path of a
protracted discussion with the non-winning contractors as this will ultimately
lead to more negativity and discomfort for you and the rejected building contractor.
