Aluminum Fence Installation

Instructions on How to Install an Aluminum Fence

Once you have purchased your aluminum fence, the installation process can begin.  First you want to stake out your property.  Determine your corner and end post locations.

You will then drive stakes into the ground and run a tight string line between the stakes to mark the fence line.  Be sure the stakes are tall enough, so the string does not touch the ground.  You are now ready to set your end, corner and gate posts.

The reason you set these posts first is because they usually need to be in predetermined, set locations.  Later, your line posts can be set according to your needs.

For 2” posts, dig holes at least 6” in diameter and 2’ deep. Insert posts into the holes and shovel your mixed concrete around the posts; fill to 4”below ground level.  Pack the excess dirt tight around the post. This will keep the post from moving.  Check to make sure post is plumb against the string line and check for levelness. Now that you have your end, corner and gate posts set, it is time to install your line posts and attach the sections of fence.

Start at an end, corner or gate post and dig three holes in the direction of your fence line.  Holes should be dug approximately 72” apart on center for 2” posts and 6’ wide sections (this number will change depending on the manufacturer and if you are using larger posts or wider sections).

Slide a fence section into the starting end, corner or gate post, then slide a line post on the opposite side.  Then concrete the line post in the ground.  Install a few sections and posts and go back over your work to straighten and level each post before your quick-setting concrete hardens.  Continue this procedure along your fence run; installing section – line post – section – line post.  Each section will be secured with a self tapping screw.

The last step to the installation process will be to install your gate.  It is advised that you wait 5 to 7 days to allow concrete to dry before installing your gates since a gate swings on your post and is the area of the fence that receives the most pressure.  Installing an aluminum fence is something that a do-it-yourselfer can easily accomplish.  Some basic tools and a little time is all that is needed.  Installing this type of fencing yourself can be a very rewarding experience since it lasts a lifetime.  It’s also a way to save a lot of money.
