By Mark J. Donovan

Mark Donovan of HomeAdditionPlus.com explains how to winterize plumbing pipes in this video.

If you have a vacation home or cabin that you don’t use during the cold winter months then you need to winterize your plumbing pipes to prevent the pipes from freezing and cracking. Every year thousands of people experience major water damage at their vacation homes and cabins because they fail to winterize their plumbing pipes properly.

Winterizing plumbing pipes includes turning off the water supply to the home and draining the supply lines of any water. In addition, you need to pour one to two cups of a non-toxic antifreeze into each sink and shower/tub drain. You also need to drain the toilet tanks of any water and pour non-toxic antifreeze into the toilet bowl and flush a couple of times. Then pour another couple cups of antifreeze into the toilet bowl.

By following these simple instructions you can prevent frozen and cracked water plumbing pipes at your vacation home or cabin during the cold winter months when it’s not in use.
