How to Adjust a Sink Stopper Video

Step-by-Step Instructions for Adjusting a Pop-Up Sink Stopper

By Mark J. Donovan

Mark Donovan, of HomeAdditionPlus.com shows how to adjust a sink stopper in this video.

When installing a new sink faucet the sink stopper needs to be adjusted to allow it to open and close freely when pushing down or pulling up on the stopper handle. In addition, sometimes the sink stopper linkage can become loose or the sink stopper nut can be so tight that the sink stopper does not operate correctly or smoothly.

To adjust a sink stopper first check to see if the sink stopper nut, which sits behind or to the side of the sink drain is tight, but not too tight. If the sink stopper handle is too difficult to push or pull then the sink stopper nut is too tight. If it is too loose you may notice a small puddle of water underneath the sink. Use a small pair of pliers to tighten or loosen the nut as required.

Next check the sink stopper linkage to see if it needs to be adjusted to allow the horizontal arm coming out from the sink stopper nut to move up and down more significantly.

Sometimes you need to adjust the location of the horizontal arm on the vertical linkage rod.

To do this, simply remove the U shaped metal bracket or screw/nut that is holding the horizontal arm to the vertical linkage rod, and adjust the location of the horizontal arm on the vertical linkage rod.

Then reattach the U shaped bracket or nut/screw to again hold the horizontal arm firmly to the vertical linkage rod.

Finally move the sink stopper pop-up handle up and down to see if the sink stopper operates correctly in the base of the sink. With any luck it should be working properly.
