Learn What Kitchen Remodeling Features are Hot Today

By Mark J. Donovan

A kitchen remodeling project is a large and expensive endeavor, however it offers many benefits. Not only does a remodeled kitchen look fabulous when it is completed, it also becomes much more functional for the modern family. Moreover, a remodeled kitchen can dramatically improve the value of your home. A kitchen remodeling project often provides a high return on investment.

Before planning your kitchen remodeling project make sure you consider the below popular kitchen remodeling trends that other homeowners are including in their kitchen remodels today.

Kitchen Cabinetry Trends

For years most homeowners have chosen natural wood kitchen cabinets such as oak, cherry, or birch for their kitchen designs and remodels.

Today it appears painted white kitchen cabinets have come back in fashion. People seem to like the bright and clean look of white kitchen cabinets. They are also less expensive than hardwood kitchen cabinets since they are typically made of lower quality materials that are painted white. Soft-close doors and functional cabinetry drawers and features are also very popular, e.g. Lazy Susans and built in platter and cookie sheet divider cabinets.

Kitchen Flooring Trends

Tile and linoleum flooring appear to be taking a back seat to wood floors in kitchen remodeling projects today. Wood floors provide a warmer look to the kitchen, and unlike ceramic tiles or linoleum, they won’t crack or split if something heavy and/or sharp is dropped on them.

Kitchen Appliance Trends

The old gas and electric range cooktops are now more frequently being passed over by homeowners for induction cooktops. Induction cooktops provide more consistent heating and can heat a pan of water in less than two minutes.

They also are very stylish and come with stainless steel surfaces. Steam ovens are also replacing the traditional electric and gas ovens.

Kitchen Lighting Trends

In terms of kitchen lighting homeowners seem to be gravitating to at least one large kitchen light fixture in the kitchen such as a chandelier or pendant light fixture. In addition, fluorescent or halogen light fixtures are also being installed under the bottom side of the upper kitchen cabinets to provide well lit kitchen countertops. In addition, spot lighting is being installed over key kitchen work areas either using pendant light fixtures or ceiling mounted recessed can lights.

Kitchen Sink Trends

Homeowners are choosing deeper stainless steel sinks today. Often they are going with single bowl sinks. In cases where homeowners prefer double bowl sinks, my preference if you do a lot of cooking, they are going with low divide double bowl sinks.

Kitchen Faucet Trends

In terms of kitchen faucet selection, most homeowners are opting for very modern / industrial style faucets today. Moreover, they are choosing auto-touch activation faucets over traditional handle operation faucets.

Kitchen Pantries

Many new kitchen designs are including butler pantries.

Having a large closet or pantry in or just off the kitchen provides easier access to stored food products and for kitchen maintenance items. Some kitchen pantries also offer neat little areas for coffee or min-bars.

Kitchen Countertop Trends

When it comes to kitchen countertops, Silestone, or quartz like countertop surfaces, appear to have an edge on granite countertops these days. Quartzite countertops are bright and durable as well as natural. They also are available in a plethora of colors and design features.
