What to Wear When Installing Fiberglass Insulation

How to Protect Yourself from the Harmful Effects of Fiberglass Insulation

By Mark J. Donovan

Fiberglass insulation is an irritant and can be harmful to the skin, eyes and throat. Consequently it is important to wear protective clothing when installing fiberglass insulation.

Also, due to the fact that so much clothing and protective gear should be worn when installing fiberglass insulation, I highly recommend installing fiberglass insulation on a cool or even cold day.

Installing insulation on hot days should be avoided.

Either you’ll bake wearing all the protective clothing and protective gear, or remove it and end up irritating your skin, eyes and throat.

The basic rule for what to wear when installing fiberglass insulation is to effectively cover your body from head to toe. Wear long pants and long sleeve shirts, along with shoes and socks. In addition, wear a pair of work gloves and a hat.

Besides clothing, it is essential to wear a mask when installing fiberglass insulation. Otherwise you’ll end up breathing in the fiberglass dust particles and will be coughing and gagging within just a few minutes of beginning your fiberglass insulation installation project. For me, even spending 5 minutes walking around in an already fiberglass insulated attic is enough to cause me to begin to cough and gag.

In addition to clothing and mask, also wear a pair of goggles to fully protect your eyes. Otherwise you’ll find your eyes itching within short order.
