How to Install a Garage Door Bottom Seal

Prevent Water, Insect and Rodent Damage in Your Garage by Installing a Garage Door Bottom Seal

By Mark J. Donovan

In this video Mark Donovan of HomeAdditionPlus.com shows how to install a garage door bottom seal.

A garage door weatherstripping seal on the bottom edge of your garage door is critical for preventing roof rain water run-off from entering into your garage.

In addition, a garage door bottom seal helps prevent insects and rodents from entering into your garage.

Tools for Installing a Garage Door Bottom Seal

Installing a garage door bottom seal is an easy DIY project. All you need is a pair of scissors, a measuring tape and a hammer to install it.

Remove Old Garage Door Bottom Seal

Prior to installing a new garage door bottom seal first remove the old one. You can use the claw end of your hammer to rip away the old garage door seal and to pull out the old nails that held it in place.

Once you’ve removed the old garage door bottom seal and nails measure and cut a new section of garage door seal to the appropriate length.

Install New Garage Door Bottom Seal

Then begin installing the new garage door bottom seal by nailing it in place starting at one end of the garage door.

Make sure to place nails every 3 to 4 inches along the length of the bottom edge of the garage door. In addition, stagger the nails forward and backwards along the bottom edge of the door.

Also, make sure to use non-corroding nails with large heads. Roofing nails work perfect for this type of project. Lastly, make sure the wide lip of the garage door bottom seal faces outwards towards the driveway.
