Garage Addition Size

Skimping on Garage Addition Size Provides Little Cost Savings and Leads to Headaches Down the Road

By Mark J. Donovan

When building a garage addition think long and hard about the garage addition size. More than too often homeowners end up building a garage addition that is too small. While developing your garage addition plans consider what you want to store in the garage besides your automobiles. An appropriately sized garage addition should be able to comfortably fit your automobiles as well as various lawn and garden tools, along with bikes and other toys.

Also, if you plan to have a garage work bench area you will need approximately 24 square feet (e.g. 3’x8’) of space for it.

In addition, when contemplating the garage addition size also consider space for storage and shelves, as well as for comfortably moving around in the garage.

Increasing the size of your garage addition has minimal effect on the overall garage addition costs. Much of the cost of building a garage addition involves just getting the various trades on site.

So whether the garage is 22’x22’, 24’x24’ or larger don’t expect much in savings from your garage addition contractor quotes by decreasing the garage addition size.

In my personal opinion I would recommend a garage addition size that is not less than 24’x24’ in dimensions. Any smaller than this and you will be unable to fit much more that a couple of automobiles in it. If a center support Lally column is required you will also find yourself having a difficult time getting into your cars and will more than likely end up dinging car doors on a regular basis.

In regards to the subject of support columns you may also want to investigate garage addition solutions that eliminate the need for them, such as including in your garage addition plans the use of engineering beams (wood or steel).

So if you are planning to build a garage addition, don’t skimp on the garage addition size. I would highly recommend a garage addition size of 26’x26’ or 26’x28’ if your existing house can aesthetically support its size and without compromising the home’s curb appeal. Both your family and your automobiles will enjoy the extra space.
