Integrated Framed Shelves with Longaberger Baskets

Home Decorating Built in Shelves with Longaberger Baskets and other Home Décor Accessories

By Mark J. Donovan

Shown in the photograph below is an example of how to spice up a large wall surface area using integrated shelves, and in this case, Longaberger baskets. When designing my family room I decided to incorporate integrated framed shelves into the gable end of the room. With the family room’s high cathedral ceilings, the gable wall just seemed too large and plain when I sketched out the room addition plans. By framing a shelf on each end of the wall I was able to break up the long and tall wall surface and create areas for displaying knick knacks, or in our case, Longaberger baskets.

During the Christmas holidays we often place Christmas ornaments in place of the baskets. I also installed speaker outlets on the gable wall just above the built in shelves, so that we could place speakers on the shelves.

The integrated framed shelves are constructed out of horizontal 2x4s pieces that are simply nailed into the vertical 2×4 wall studs that make up the gable end of the family room wall. A long 2×4 horizontal plate caps off the ends of the horizontal 2×4 pieces that extend outward from the wall, to complete the basic shelf frame.

The framed shelves were then simply encased in drywall to complete them. The shelves extend outward from the gable wall by 12 inches and are place approximately 8 feet off the floor of the family room.

So when designing your home or home addition consider integrating built in shelves into some of your new home construction walls. In our case we decided to install framed shelves that protruded outward from the walls. You may want to consider installing recessed shelves instead. If you do, just remember recessed shelves require space. Consequently you’ll need to use either wider vertical wall studs, e.g. 2x8s or have to push into an area behind the wall using 2×4 framing members.
