How to Refinish a Door Video

Refinishing a Door is a Great Alternative to Replacing It

By Mark J. Donovan

In this video Mark Donovan, of HomeAdditionPlus.com shows how to refinish a door and to restore it to its original beauty.

To restore a door you will need an orbital sander, 60 and 120 sandpaper, fine steel wool, and a foam sanding block.

Before starting the process of refinishing a door remove all of the door hardware, including the door knob, and door hinges.

After sanding the door down to bare wood, apply a single coat of stain, followed by two coats of polyurethane. Allow the door to fully dry in between coats of stain and polyurethane. Also, lightly sand the door with fine steel wool in between coats of polyurethane. This will help to achieve a smoother door finish. Make sure to always wipe the door down after sanding with a clean, dry rag.

Finally, apply a coat of butchers wax over the door to create a smooth silky finish.
