Crawl Space Doors

Crawl Space Door Systems for Ventilated and Unventilated Crawl Spaces

By Mark J. Donovan

A crawl space door is important to incorporate into home plans that include a crawl space. A crawl space door is necessary for accessing crawl space vents and for reaching electrical wires and plumbing pipes that typically reside underneath a crawl space. In addition, it is important to have an air tight and insulated crawl space door if it is to be used in an unvented crawl space. An unvented crawl space is specifically designed to keep moisture out of the crawl space and heat in it.

There are a number of pre-manufactured crawl space doors on the market today that are made out of plastic and steel, and that are available in a plethora of shapes and sizes.

Many pre-manufactured crawl space doors include louvers so that they can be used in vented crawl space applications by simply removing the crawl space door cover during hot and humid conditions.

The advantage of using a pre-manufactured crawl space door is that they are resistant to mold and mildew growth, and won’t rot. However, make sure when considering a pre-manufactured crawl space door to examine the hinge and latching hardware. Make sure that the hardware is also rust proof.

Alternatively, you can also make your own crawl space door out of wood. Just make sure you insulate the back of it and use non-rusting hinge and latching hardware.

The only concern I have with using a wooden crawl space door, is that even though the crawl space may include a vapor barrier, the door is still low to the outside ground and thus is susceptible to water damage.
