Install Skylights in Finished Attic Addition Video

Every Finished Attic Addition Project Should Include the Installation of Skylights

By Mark J. Donovan

In this video Mark Donovan of HomeAdditionPlus.com discusses the benefits of installing skylights in a finished attic addition.

If you have plans to finish your attic make sure your plans include the installation of skylights. Skylights offer a number of both functional and aesthetic advantages, and particularly so in a finished attic.

First, skylights enable an otherwise dark attic addition to have much more natural light entry. Most attic additions have limited possibilities of including standard windows.

Often the most that can be considered is the installation of standard wall windows along the gable end of the attic space. And that is simply not enough. The finished attic will turn out to be a dark space, unless you put in a great deal of electrical lighting, which is expensive to install and means high monthly electrical bills.

Skylights in an attic also provide the benefit of the chimney effect for cooling your entire house. On hot days, simply open the skylight windows in the attic and the wall windows down in the lower levels of the home.

The hot air in the finished attic, along with the rest of the home, will be sucked out the skylight windows and cooler air drawn in from the lower level windows, thus the chimney effect.

Skylight windows also enable you to vent cooking smells, and odors from the out-gassing of building materials and fabrics, thus making your attic addition, as well as your entire home, smell fresher. Not to mention, your family will be breathing healthier air.

Skylights have come a long way since the 1970’s. Today’s skylights have built in screens/blinds that can be remotely controlled or programmed to open or close at different times of the day. In addition, skylights come in single, dual and even triple Low-E glass for ensuring a highly energy efficient window and attic addition.

So again, if you are planning an attic addition, make sure your plans include the installation of skylights in your finished attic addition. You’ll be thanking yourself for years to come.
