Save Time and Money Finishing a Ceiling by Choosing the Industrial Ceiling
Look
By Mark J. Donovan
|
|
One inexpensive way to finish a
ceiling is to simply paint the ceiling rafters, joists and mechanical surfaces.
This type of ceiling is referred to as an industrial ceiling. Industrial
ceilings are becoming more and more common in both commercial and residential
buildings because they save time and money, look unique, and offer some
functional benefits. An industrial ceiling in a basement, for example, is a
great way to finish a ceiling, particularly when headroom height is a concern.
Often putting in a dropped ceiling in a basement is not possible due to the
limited headroom height, and choosing a drywall ceiling limits accessibility to
plumbing and electrical fixtures.
|
By choosing an industrial ceiling
look in the basement you can get the best of multiple worlds, maintain adequate
headroom height, access to mechanical fixtures in the ceiling, and an attractive
finished ceiling to boot.
The process of creating an industrial ceiling look involves painting everything
in the ceiling including the rafters/joists, plumbing fixtures, duct work and
electrical connections if they’ve already been installed.
|
|
Prior to finishing your ceilings with
an industrial look it is important to check with your local building inspector
to see what can and cannot be painted. In some cases certain mechanical items
may not be allowed to be painted. Also, the building inspector may specify only
certain types of paint to be used. The last thing you want, for example, is to
apply paint to duct work that produces a strong odor every time the duct work
heats up or possibly blisters and bubbles.
The best method for creating an
industrial ceiling look is to spray the paint onto the ceiling.
|
| Consequently you’ll need an air compressor, paint gun, and
protective clothing, including eye and respiratory protection. Also, it is
imperative that the ceiling be completely cleaned and made free of dust
prior to applying paint to the ceiling and mechanical surfaces. If the
ceiling surfaces are left unclean and dusty the paint will not adhere well
and in just a short time you may begin to notice peeling paint surfaces.
Moreover, creating the industrial ceiling look is best done early on in a
home remodeling project, particularly if you do not want to paint the
mechanical pieces that reside up in the ceiling rafters or joists. |

So if you want a finished ceiling and
are looking for a unique look, or have ceiling height concerns, consider an
industrial ceiling finish. Not only will you create a unique looking ceiling
you’ll save time and money on your home remodeling project in the process.
