Choosing a Color Scheme for Your Bathroom

Tips for Selecting a Bathroom Color Scheme

Your bathroom is a place where you can really let your imagination take hold and create a uniquely relaxing ambiance within your home.  However, bathrooms can be difficult to decorate, because some portions, such as tile on the walls and floor, can be difficult or very expensive to replace.  Here are some tips for choosing a color scheme for your bathroom that will achieve the look you want while building on your preexisting color schemes.

If You Have Patterned Tiles

Whether you have inherited a bathroom with patterned tiles or you want to refresh a room that you decorated in the past, a profusion of colors in the tiles can make it tricky to find complementary curtains, shower curtains, and other accents.  A good tip is to take three colors from the preexisting patterns and use them for your decorating theme.  The background color, a mid-toned color, and the brightest color in the pattern are good choices.

Use the background color for large areas such as your wall paint or shower curtains.  Highlight the mid-tone color in your bathmats and curtains.  Finally, use the bright color for accent pieces like wall hangings, decorative candles, and bath towels.  Make sure to repeat the colors throughout the room.

If You Have Colored Tiles

If your tiles are a solid color, look for fabrics that blend that color with complimentary hues.  For example, the navy of your tiles could be picked up in a floral fabric with a navy blue background or a red, white, and navy checkered pattern.  Use the other colors in the fabric for inspiration, as described above.  Use the fabric itself for curtains, lampshades, and other decorative touches to pull the look of the room together.

If You Have White or Neutral Tiles

Neutral shades are very popular in a bathroom because they match nearly any style of décor.  Consider a Zen-style bathroom, which combines light and dark tones with natural accents like green plants or stone sculptures.  Use bright tones, such as plush red towels or bright orange floral wall hangings, to add color and interest to the room.
