Bathroom Remodeler Selection
Don’t Just Hire any Bathroom Remodeler for
Your Bathroom Remodeling Project
By: Mark J. Donovan
|
|
For many homeowners, undertaking a
bathroom remodel project is the perfect first step for improving the live-in
value of their home. It’s a space people spend a lot of time in and it’s more
affordable than undertaking a kitchen remodeling project. And even if they don’t
plan on selling their home in the near future, a bathroom remodel provides one
of the best returns on investment when it comes to home remodeling projects.
Hiring the right bathroom remodeler for the project however can be a challenge.
The right bathroom remodeler needs to possess a combination of general
contracting skills and an understanding of contemporary bathroom design trends.
|
|
Hire a bathroom remodeler who lacks
either of these two attributes and you may end up with a bathroom remodel that
is less than you hoped or bargained for.
When hiring a bathroom remodeler make sure to interview prospective candidates
that can present you with a portfolio of recently completed bathroom remodeling
projects. Carefully review the bathroom remodeling design features that each
bathroom remodeler incorporates into their bathroom remodels, and assess if they
meet your bathroom remodeling ideas and objectives.
Also make sure each bathroom remodeler includes references as part of their
portfolio presentation so that you can make the appropriate reference checks.
|
 |
|
|
I always recommend getting at least
three reference checks for each candidate, and at least one reference should be
from a slightly older project, such as 3 to 5 years. This way you can understand
not only each bathroom remodeler’s current work ethics, but also how his or her
work stands up to father time. Also check with the Better Business Bureau and
your appropriate state government agency to see if any of the candidates have
any poor reviews or legal issues.
For your part, you should provide to
bathroom remodeler candidates a list of key features you want to see
incorporated into your bathroom remodel.
|
Also, sketches of your
proposed bathroom layout can also be of great help in explaining your bathroom
remodeling goals. Moreover, any pictures of particular design bathroom design
ideas that you want to have incorporated into the bathroom remodel should also
be provided to the bathroom remodeler candidates.
Besides the key bathroom design features, it’s also important to discuss during
the bathroom remodeler selection process any type of structural or mechanical
changes that may be required. For example, will any walls need to be moved or
framed to support a new Jacuzzi tub or custom ceramic tile shower? Also, will
any additional electrical or rough plumbing be required to support the new
bathroom remodel plans? By having a lengthy conversation with bathroom remodeler
candidates and asking the right questions you should be able to ascertain if
they have the general contracting skills to undertake such a project. Again, you
don’t want to hire a bathroom remodeler who is strong on bathroom design ideas
but weak on practical experience in carpentry and general contracting.
Also find out if the bathroom remodeler plans to use
subcontractors, such as for plumbing and electrical work, or if they will do
this type of work themselves. If they tell you they plan to do the plumbing
and/or electrical work themselves, ask for them to provide copies of their
plumbing and electrical licenses. They must have them to do the work.
Also, if your home was built pre 1978 confirm that the bathroom remodeler
candidates have gone through lead paint and RRP certification. If they
haven’t, then by federal law they should not work on the project. |

A home built pre 1978 could have lead paint in it. There are specific federal
laws on the books on how to remodel or work on a home that could potentially
have lead paint in it. If a bathroom remodeler candidate dismisses this as no
big deal, find another contractor.
