Filling in a Large Channel Cut in a Concrete Basement Floor

Two Solutions for Filling in Large Channel Cuts in Concrete Basement Floors

By: Mark J. Donovan

When finishing a basement sometimes it is necessary to cut channels in the concrete basement floor. Frequently this is necessary to remove old oil lines or to install new oil or waste water lines.

The question often arises on what is the best way to fill the channel that has been cut into the concrete basement floor. The answer really depends on the depth and width of the channel cut. If the channel is less than 2 inches in depth and width it is best to use a floor self leveling compound versus a concrete mixture.

The reason for this is that the new concrete will not adhere well to the existing concrete floor if the channel is too narrow or shallow.

When the channel is deeper than two inches and wider than two inches then a concrete product such as Quickrete is more appropriate than the leveling compound.

An alternative to removing old oil lines from under the concrete floor is to simply cut them flush with the concrete floor.

To make large channel cuts in concrete basement floors you can rent concrete cutting wet saws from most home improvement centers. Keep in mind, however, there is still a great deal of mess and noise when cutting concrete basement floors, so wear proper clothes, eye and hearing protection. Also make sure the basement is properly vented when cutting a concrete basement floor as the gas fumes generated by the saw could lead to asphyxia otherwise.
