What is a Square of Shingles
A Roof’s Shingled Surface Area is Measured in
Squares of Shingles
By Mark J. Donovan
|
|
When a roofing
contractor provides you with a quote on shingling your roof, he will
typically tell you how many squares of shingles will be required. For most
homeowners this means very little. However it is important to understand
this term as it will give you the ability to assess whether the quote is
accurate or not.
A square of
shingles represents a 10’ x 10’ area (or 100 square feet) of roof surface
area. Shingles are sold in bundles and a bundle can weigh between 70 and 140
lbs. |
|
|
Typically 3 bundles of shingles
equal a square of shingles, however depending upon the weight of the
particular shingles one square of shingles could equate to 4 or even 5
bundles.
If you plan to shingle your own
roof and need to calculate the squares of shingles or number of shingle
bundles required, simply measure the roof’s square footage by multiplying
the length x width. Then divide this result by 100 to determine the number
of squares of shingles required.
|

|
|
|
Finally,
multiply the squares of shingles result times the number of bundles per
square to determine the number of shingle bundles required.
Again, 3
bundles per square is a fairly common conversion factor, however check the
packaging on the particular shingles you plan on using to be sure.
If you are
planning to install your own roofing shingles make sure to also purchase
felt paper, ice and water shield, drip edge, flashing, roofing nails, and
ridge vent material.
|
If this list of
roofing material sounds a little daunting keep in mind that the work required
shingling a roof is extremely strenuous and dangerous, so make sure you fully
think through the idea of installing your own shingles before climbing up on
your roof.
