A gambrel roof
enables an additional floor to be constructed in a home or building for a
much lower cost. A gambrel roof has two slopes, with the bottom slope being
steeper than the top, and gable walls on the ends. The lower level slope on
a gambrel roof is very steep, and the upper level slope is much shallower.
As a result of the steep lower level slope, what would otherwise be an attic
in most building designs becomes a finished second floor in gambrel roof

Gambrel roofs are frequently used
in barn and other detached building designs due to their lower cost per
square foot construction costs and their utility. Gambrel roof styles are
also used in home construction as well. Cost savings are realized due to the
fact that roofing shingles are used on the lower sloped sides instead of
more expensive house clapboards or other home siding products. In addition,
with a gambrel roof style home there is very limited wasted attic space. |

interesting.
