Cold Weather Roofing

Key Issues to consider for Cold Weather Roofing of Asphalt Shingles

By Aaron Klimchuk

While many of us aren’t ready for them, the cold winter months are quickly approaching.  With blistering winds, dry air and below freezing temperatures most of us are quite content with sitting at home wrapped in a blanket with a hot cup of coffee or hot chocolate in our hands.  The problem is home improvement projects and repairs don’t have the same plans.

While some repair or replacement projects can be put off for a while until warmer weather comes, roofing issues must be addressed as quickly as possible.

Because even the smallest of roofing problems can quickly lead to major problems if left unattended for a short amount of time, roofing repairs needed to be made in a timely fashion, even if it’s in the dead of winter.  While this is easy enough to say, there are very important aspects and procedures that need to be accounted for to properly complete a cold weather roofing project.

Cold Weather Roofing, Asphalt Shingles, and Heat activated adhesive

Roof Shingles

The most popular material for residential roofs is asphalt shingles, making up almost 80% of the market.  To figure out how cold temperatures could affect your roofing project you have to understand how these asphalt shingles are in installed.  The overlapping layer of each individual shingle is pre-coated with a layer of heat activated adhesive.  This is the primary means of attaching each shingle to the next.  When this adhesive isn’t working correctly, due to the cold weather, shingles will not adhere to one another properly, and eventually you will wind up seeing missing roof shingles. The loss of even one roof shingle could turn into a massive leak if left alone.

Heat Activated Adhesive

The problem is that in the winter months, even with the Sun’s rays working their hardest, the adhesive simply doesn’t get warm enough (60 degrees Fahrenheit for most brands) to activate correctly.  This means other methods are necessary to properly install a shingled roof in the winter.

A small amount of roofing cement or tar should be applied to each shingle to ensure it bonds to the others as quickly as possible.  Also be sure your roofing contractor nails shingles in appropriate and approved nailing areas which are designed to help hold shingles down in high wind situations.  When a roofer combines these two procedures shingles are sure to stay put even when installed in the coldest winter months.

Fiberglass Asphalt based shingles used on your home should be compliant with ASTM D-3462 standards, and Organic based shingles used on your home should be compliant with ASTM D-225. More and more municipalities are requiring shingles to meet these standards, so you should check with your local building inspector and read the label on the shingles prior to purchasing them.

If you’ve noticed your home or business’ roof is in need of repair or replacement during cold temperatures you’re going to want to discuss all this with the roofing installation contractor you choose for the job.  Ask them if they plan to use a low temperature roofing cement to make the adhesive process start instantly.

Where to nail Roofing shingles

With roofing contractors a dime a dozen these days, be sure you compare estimates from a variety of local roofers and ask each what they plan on doing to ensure you shingled roof works to the best of it’s abilities even though it’s being installed in the winter.
