What is a Chimney Cricket?
How to Prevent Water Infiltration around a
Chimney
By Mark J. Donovan
|
|
A chimney cricket is used to
redirect water around a chimney that protrudes from a roof. For example,
when a chimney protrudes from a home’s roof such that the sloping roof runs
into it, then a chimney cricket is normally built to redirect the shedding
of roof water away from the chimney. Without the chimney cricket, shedding
water would be impeded from flowing off the roof, and the risk of rain water
infiltrating the home around the chimney would be increased. |
A chimney cricket, also
referred to as a saddle, is effectively a small peak shaped roof projection that
is positioned perpendicular to the chimney and main roof. It is similar to a
small gable dormer that has its gable end butting up against the side of the
chimney.
The chimney cricket is always
shingled and flashed where it meets the chimney. It is relatively easy to
construct.
