When the daily
temperatures begin to drop and the days are shorter it’s a
wise idea to spend a weekend or two winterizing your home.
Home winterizing in the fall is essential for ensuring an
energy efficient home and for making sure items in your yard
do not get damaged due to the harsh winter elements.
When winterizing a home windows should be at the top of your
to-do list. Windows are notorious for allowing heat to exit
your home. |
Make sure to caulk around the exterior
of the windows, and doors for that matter too, to make sure your
home will be free of cold drafts this winter. Also, on the
window interiors, consider installing window and door foam
insulation strips, particularly if your windows are older. In
addition, attach storm windows if you have them. They are ideal
for helping to prevent cold drafts from entering your the home
with older windows. Also make sure to check that your exterior
doors close properly and consider installing new door weather
strips if the existing ones are damaged in any way.

Another quick tip for easy home winterizing is to
make sure your furnace and chimney are in good working order so you maximize
your furnace’s heating efficiency. However hire a professional service
technician to inspect and make any tune ups required.
When it comes to home winterizing around the
exterior of your home start by raking up any leaves and picking up and
storing away any summer yard toys and furniture. Also inspect and clean out
the gutters. Leaves and debris left in the gutters leads to ice dams in the
winter, which can cause water and physical damage to your home.

In regards to winterizing your home
garden, start out by removing all the old vegetable plant
debris. Old vegetable plant debris left in the garden can lead
to fungus and insect infestation. You may also want to apply
Lime, fertilizer or compost to your garden to allow it time to
soak in and absorb into the soil.
Finally, fall is a great time to refinish your deck with a fresh
coat of stain or paint. A new coat of stain or paint can help to
protect the deck from water and ultraviolet damage during the
winter months. Plus, it’s one less thing you need to think about
in the spring when it’s normally wetter.
