Latest Happenings
In this month’s newsletter I’ve posted a number of new articles associated with
keeping warm this winter and what to not caulk when caulking windows. Though the
days have been pretty mild this fall, much of New Hampshire has already had
20-30 inches of snow so far, and winter is still several weeks away. Being
reminded of the impending cold weather, I thought it would be a good idea to
discuss some of the various heating alternatives to the standard home heating
solutions. Also, for those of you thinking about selling your home in the near
future, I also wrote a piece on when it’s best to have a home inspection.
Finally, I wrote an article on “Planning a Second Story Addition” that many of
you might find as an interesting alternative to “building out”.
Where to Caulk Around Windows
When winterizing your home in the fall, a common suggestion is to make sure to
caulk around the exterior windows. In general, this is sound advice. However,
you should not caulk all around the window. Doing so can lead to serious house
damage caused by rot and mold growth. Read my article on “Learning what not to
Caulk when Caulking Windows”.
Radiant Heat and Ceramic Floor Tile
One way to keep you feet and body feeling warmer this winter is by installing
radiant heat underneath your ceramic tiled floors. Radiant heat is an incredibly
warm and comfortable type of heat that warms you from the ground up, and
surprisingly it’s not as difficult to install as one might think. See my article
on “Radiant Heat and Ceramic Floor Tile” to learn how to have warmer kitchen and
bathroom tiled floors.
Outdoor Heating Furnaces for the Home
Many people elect to use wood burning stoves to supplement their main heating
source during the winter months. However, wood burning stoves are messy, need to
be reloaded every few hours, and require the wood to be cut and split into small
pieces to fit into the wood stove. An outdoor heating furnace can eliminate many
of these problems while providing you with even greater warmth than the
traditional wood stove. Read my complete article on “Outdoor Heating Furnaces
for the Home” to learn if an outdoor wood burning furnace is right for you.
Reducing Heating Bills this Winter
Keep your home warmer this winter and save money on your monthly home heating
bills by implementing the seven suggestions I have described in my article on
“Reducing Heating Bills”. All of the suggestions are very inexpensive to
implement and can all be done by the novice homeowner.
Planning a Second Story Addition
Building a second story addition is a great way to expand the living space of
your home if you don’t have the luxury of expanding outwards. However, building
a second story addition can be extremely disruptive to the family, and often
requires moving out of the home for a period of time. Careful planning and
conducting an upfront structural inspection are critical when contemplating
building a second story addition. Read the complete article at “Planning a
Second Story Addition”.
Best Time for a Home Inspection
For most prospective home buyers they sink money into a home inspection when
they sign a purchase and sales (P&S) agreement on a home. The agreement is
usually contingent upon a home inspection that they are satisfied with. Though
this is a wise decision, they’re not necessarily the only ones that should be
thinking about having a home inspection. If you plan to sell your home soon read
on at “Best Time for a Home Inspection”.
