Happy New Year to all! With 2008 now
behind us lets hope for a better 2009. 2008 was tough on us for many reasons, a
collapsed housing market, an economy in recession, and many industries in tail
spins looking for federal hand outs.
Personally for me, we ended the year
living through the worst ice storm ever to hit New Hampshire. Nearly half a
million homes were with out power in sub-freezing temperatures. Our home was
without electrical power for 10 days, which meant no heat, water, sewage, or
refrigeration. Fortunately after the 8th day without power we were
able to buy a portable generator and have some rudimentary living conditions.
See
Ice Storm Video.
Though the final month of 2008 was a
challenge, personally l learned a great deal. First, I was reminded of how
dependent upon electricity our society is. Without electricity our living
conditions quickly revert back to colonial living. Second, I was also reminded
how quickly all supplies dry up at stores, e.g. batteries, candles, lamp oil,
food, gas cans, etc. On the positive side, however, I was able to develop a
number of new home improvement articles and videos that centered around the
subject of electricity, or the lack thereof. In particular I created a number of
articles and videos on how to properly use a
portable generator, and how to correctly wire
it into your home. A number of house fires were started in New Hampshire during
the power outage due to improper use of portable generators.
I also created several new articles
on proper
electrical grounding and
basic home electrical wiring. In addition, I
also created a couple of new videos on topics such as
installing programmable thermostats,
installing a light chandelier and
mounting furring strips to concrete basement walls,
a necessary part of installing a generator transfer switch.
Finally, I am pleased to report that
I have ported HomeAdditionPlus.com’s collection of nearly 70 home improvement
videos over to 5min.com, and am now displaying them on HomeAdditionPlus.com with
the 5min.com player. The 5min.com player is excellent for viewing how to
videos, due to its neat zoom in and slow motion features. See
Home Improvement
Videos.
As always, if you have any specific
home improvement questions or would like to see specific new home improvement
related content send your questions to me at mark@homeadditionplus.com.
Again,
good luck with your DIY home improvement projects and happy New Year!
