Latest Happenings
Since my last newsletter I have been busy working on various projects around my
homes, vacationing and traveling, and finally getting a chance to meet some of
the faces at Google. Also in the process I found some time to publish a number
of new articles, and a video, on various home improvement projects. Besides
writing this newsletter I am also scheduled to be on a live radio show today
(08/29/10) focused on home improvement in the United States. The show starts at
1:00pm EDT today, and can be heard online at www.HomeImprovementUSA.fm if you
have an interest in learning more about HomeAdditionPlus.com.
I also wrote a couple of editorial pieces on my HomeAddition blog site (www.homeaddition.blogspot.com)
regarding the state of the housing market and a call for economic policy change.
Unfortunately I don’t see the United States housing market improving anytime
soon without a change in economic policy course. Feel free to visit the
HomeAddition blog site to learn more, but be forewarned, the articles are blunt
and I don’t hold back any punches.
Google Visit
Earlier this month I had a chance to attend one of Google’s seminars in Boston,
MA titled “Adsense in your City”. It was a chance to learn about Google’s latest
updates in its Adsense program (the program that provides contextual
advertisements on publisher sites such as HomeAdditionPlus.com). I had never
attended one of these events before and wasn’t sure what to expect. Suffice it
to say I was very impressed with the folks I met at Google and I learned a great
deal. In particular I learned some things that should help visitors to
HomeAdditionPlus.com.
One of the improvements I have already implemented on HomeAdditionPlus.com is
the improvement of the “Search” capabilities on the site. I have now updated and
installed more obvious search boxes on both the top and bottom of each page of
HomeAdditionPlus.com, to enable site visitors to find answers to their questions
faster. Frequently I get visitors emailing me questions that I know I have
already provided answers to on the site. With the improved search boxes,
HomeAdditionPlus.com visitors can now often get instant answers by simply
posting their question in either of the search boxes.
Trip to Montreal Canada
I also spent a weekend up in Montreal Canada earlier this month to take in some
R&R but also to see some of the residential architectures around Mont Tremblant,
a major ski area north of Montreal by about 1-3/4 hours. Besides a fantastic ski
resort, I had a chance to take in some of the beautiful lake and mountain ski
homes in the area.
How to Dethatch a Lawn Video
With the approach of late summer and early fall, it’s a perfect time to consider
dethatching your lawn. Dethatching is a necessary part of maintaining a healthy
lawn. In my new video on “How to Dethatch a Lawn” I discuss the reasons for
dethatching, the types of lawnmower accessory dethatchers, and how to set the
tine height on dethatchers. See “How
to Dethatch a Lawn Video” to learn more.
Plastic vs Metal Electrical Boxes
Many do it yourself homeowners eventually find themselves tackling a minor
electrical wiring project. One of the questions that I frequently receive is
which type of electrical box should I use? In my article titled “Plastic
Electrical Boxes vs Metal Electrical Boxes” I provide the advantages
and disadvantages of each and when to use which particular type.
Chimney Flues and Flue Liners
With Fall weather right around the corner I decided to write a number of
articles on chimney flues. Chimney flues play an important role in making sure
your heating system runs properly, whether its oil, gas, or wood fuel burning
based. If you are looking for information on chimneys make sure to check out my
latest articles on “Chimney
Flue Liner Installation Types”, “Chimney
Liner Repair”, and “Chimney
Cap Advantages and Disadvantages”.
Direct Gas Stoves versus Ventless Gas Stoves
In the spirit of approaching colder weather I also wrote an article on direct
gas stoves versus ventless gas stoves. Gas stoves and provide both functional
and aesthetic beauty to a home, however there are some serious issues to
consider before purchasing one. Make sure to read my article on “Gas
Stoves” before purchasing one, particularly if you are contemplating
a ventless gas stove type.
Tiling a Shower
I also had a question come in this past week on what order to tile a shower.
Should the floor or walls be tiled first? If you have plans to tile a shower
make sure to check out my article on “Tiling
a Shower – Floors or Walls First?” Also you may want to take a look
at my “Shower
Membrane Liner Installation Ebook” and “Tiling
a Custom Shower Ebook”. Both provide a wealth of knowledge and
instructions on how to install a leak free custom ceramic tile shower.
