Home Improvement News for the DIY Homeowner

August 2009            Edition: 0044

HomeAdditionPlus.com August, 2009 Newsletter

We are finally having some semblance of a summer here in New England.  We have now had a couple of weeks of warm weather with even some humidity creeping in. I actually turned on my basement dehumidifier last week to prevent the condensation of water from forming on the cold supply line plumbing pipes. While setting up my portable dehumidifier I was reminded of some of the other benefits dehumidifiers offer, as well as a question I had once received on why dehumidifiers occasionally freeze up. Consequently I thought it might be worthwhile to include in this month’s newsletter a couple of links to two articles that I wrote on dehumidifiers.  See my articles on Basement Dehumidifiers and How to Prevent Dehumidifier Freeze Up to learn more.

I have also spent a significant amount of time this month writing about planning home addition projects. In particular I wrote a number of articles on various home addition projects and explain in them the steps involved in estimating home addition costs, hiring contractors, and checking references. All are equally important to ensure a smooth home addition project. I also discussed the various benefits of each type of home addition project. So if you are considering a home addition project be sure to check out one of my articles on Estimating Home Addition Costs, Room Additions, Kitchen Additions, Bathroom Additions, Master Bedroom Additions, and Sunroom Additions.

Storage was another major topic for me over the past month. After living in a home for 20 years, you have the tendency to collect a lot of things and clutter becomes a real issue. You basically have three choices when you get to this stage. You can haul some of the stuff to dump, try to ignore it, or find better ways to store it.  My wife and I chose a combination of a number of dump visits and new storage solutions.  If you have a cluttered home, you may want to check out my articles on Basement Storage Shelves, Garage Storage Cabinets and Garage Ceiling Storage Solutions.

Finally, I wrote a few additional articles on basement topics that may be of interest to you. If you are looking to get in better shape, check out my article on creating a Basement Home Gym. Also, if you are considering finishing your basement you will want to read my articles on How to Hide Basement Ductwork, and the Use of Basement Window Wells and Glass Block Windows to brighten up a finished basement.

As always, if you have any specific home improvement questions or would like to see specific new home improvement related content send your questions to me at mark@homeadditionplus.com.

Again, good luck with your DIY home improvement projects and enjoy the remaining days of summer. School opens in just a couple of weeks.
