Dear HomeAdditionPlus.com Website Visitor,

With the fall season well underway and the leaves mostly now blanketing the ground, I thought it would be a great time to review basic leaf blower etiquette. Leaf blowers can help in the collection of leaves, however they are very noisy, particularly gas leaf blowers. Consequently, if you are interested in keeping in good stead with you neighbors it is important you follow a few basic rules of leaf blower etiquette.

First, if you live in an urban or suburban area wait until at least mid morning before firing up that 2 stroke gas leaf blower. The last thing neighbors want to hear is the high pitch wine of a gas leaf blower early on a Sunday morning.

Second, know your leaf blower’s limitations. There is no point in trying to push wet leaves around. It just doesn’t work, so don’t waste hours attempting it. Even in mid-day, neighbors can only take the sounds of a gas leaf blower for so long. Finally, do not blow the leaves in your yard into your neighbors, even if they came from their trees. This is a quick way to incite your neighbors. For more tips on leaf blowers, and alternatives to gas leaf blowers see my full article on "Gas Leaf Blower Etiquette".

Fall is also a great time of the year to install storm doors. Storm doors can dramatically reduce drafts in the home, and some of the high end storm doors can actually add another layer of security to your home. See my article on "Installing Storm Doors" to learn more.

Finally, if you have a garden, take a look at my article on “Winterizing Your Garden”. Fall is a great time of the year to prepare your garden for next years planting. By removing dead plant growth now, you can eliminate the risk of insects and disease from next year’s planting. Also, some of those leaves you collect from the fallen trees can add some important nutrients to your garden if you work them into your garden now.

If you have some of your own fall and early winter home improvement tips that you would like to share with the HomeAdditionPlus.com community, send them to me and I will consider adding them to the HomeAdditionPlus.com website.

Also, if you have specific home improvement questions feel free to visit the Ask HomeAdditionPlus forum, where you can share your questions, and get answers from our community of homeowners and contractors.

As always, if you have any specific Home Improvement questions or would like to see articles on certain subjects send me an email at contact@homeadditionplus.com.

Again, good luck with your fall home improvement projects!!

Gas Leaf Blower Etiquette

If I was asked to put together a top 10 list of the worst inventions, a gas leaf blower would be near the top of my list. A gas leaf blower is an extremely annoying and loud machine that provides little to no value to anyone, including the person running it. [Read More]

Installing Storm Doors

Installing a Storm door is an excellent way to reduce your home’s winter heating bills and to enjoy the warm weather months without the insects. In addition, a quality storm door can also add another level of security to your home. [Read More]

Winterizing your Garden

When the leaves have turned color and are beginning to fall off the trees it is time to prepare your garden for winter.  Winterizing your garden is an important step to ensuring a healthy garden next year. Start winterizing your garden by removing the dead plant remnants from this year’s garden. [Read More]

Installing Granite Steps

Granite steps can really dress up the front of a home. Their natural look along with their ruggedness and low maintenance makes them an excellent alternative to other doorstep choices.

A few years back I decided to replace the prefab concrete staircase that graced my home’s entranceway with granite steps. [Read More]
