With the kids now heading back to school and summer just about behind us it
is the perfect time of year for tackling some outdoor home improvement
projects. With the more moderate temperatures, early fall is a great season
for resealing your driveway, painting the house, or even residing your home.
If your home’s driveway has not been sealed in at least 3 years it’s probably
time to seal it, particularly if you live in colder climates. Sealing your
driveway will prevent water damage caused by water seeping into the driveway
cracks and freezing during the winter months.
The constant freezing and unfreezing of the soil below
the asphalt causes the asphalt to break up over time, which leads to a failed
driveway. See our article on
Sealing an Asphalt driveway.
If your driveway has already failed you may want to
consider redoing your driveway altogether. See our
Asphalt Driveway Paving Bid Sheet before hiring
a driveway contractor.
Fall is a great time for painting your home. The air
temperatures and humidity levels are ideal for painting your home. Also the
insects (particularly the bees) are less active during the fall months, enabling
you to more easily remove any nests that may have developed over the summer
months. Before starting your exterior home painting you’ll want to read our
article on
how to paint your home’s exterior.
If your looking to provide a more dramatic look to your
home’s exterior by residing your house with wood siding then you will want to
read our new article on
Siding your House. This how-to article goes
over the basics of siding choices and the instructions on installing wood
siding.
Finally if you are considering building a new home or
adding a family room addition on to your existing home, take a look at our

some key insights into the process of building an addition and finding the right

With summer almost behind us, now is the time to think about sealing your

Besides providing your home
with more living space, building a family room addition
can be a terrific investment. However, before embarking on building a
family room addition the homeowner should first consider several important
items. These items include: home market values in the neighborhood,
financing, home building costs, family room design plans (size and scale
of project), architecture, timetable for completion, personal
disruption/inconvenience threshold and the sweat equity commitment level.[Read

Asphalt and concrete are the most popular types of material for paving
driveways. Asphalt driveways and concrete driveways both have their unique
advantages. If you live in a cold climate and are considering a concrete
driveway you need to make sure the base for the driveway is heavily laid
with gravel and it is compacted first. Otherwise the driveway will run the
risk of cracking due to frost heaves. In addition, concrete is susceptible
to salt damage, a material frequently used on roads in cold weather parts
of the country. [Read

Putty any dings in the siding, or if
the area has significant damage you may want to literally reside the area. Make
sure all nails are properly sunk into the wood. You may even want to putty in
the nail holes for a really finished look.[Read
