Kitchen Trends

Kitchen Design Trends Continue to Change with our Lifestyles

By Mark J. Donovan

Kitchen trends continuously evolve. What’s new today is old tomorrow and new again sometime in the future. This said, there are kitchen design features that never seem to grow old. Every kitchen has cabinets and countertops, appliances, and a sink and faucet for preparing and cleaning food and dishes.

Today’s kitchen trends include natural stone countertops, eat in areas, and low energy lighting. Granite countertops are extremely popular, as well as Quartz stone type countertops such as Silestone surfaces.

Another kitchen trend with today’s on the go family are kitchen countertop islands where people can grab a quick meal that is near the refrigerator and sink.

Stainless steel appliances are another kitchen design trend today. Nearly every homeowner wants a stainless steel refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher.

The steel evokes a sheik and clean kitchen look, and parents seem less interested today in posting their kids report cards and pictures on the fridge for everyone to see.

Kitchen lighting has also evolved in recent years. Instead of standard overhead lighting centered in the middle of the kitchen and a light over the kitchen sink, today’s kitchen design trends include spot workspace lighting over countertops, and sinks and faucets, and even over eating areas. Also, kitchen light fixtures are much more energy efficient today with Halogen and LED type lighting technologies.

In terms of kitchen cabinets, there are constant new trends in cabinet features. Lazy Susans, for example, continue to evolve. Also, many kitchen cabinets now include integrated spice racks and trays that slide out for easy access to cooking ingredients and supplies. Hardwood kitchen cabinets have also become a popular kitchen trend.

Gone are the days of simple pine, plywood, or metal kitchen cabinets. Homeowners instead want kitchen’s that have effectively beautiful furniture in them.

On the plumbing front there are constantly new kitchen trends in faucets and sinks. Years ago, it was the two handled faucet that was the staple in every kitchen. Today, kitchen faucets are typically one handle and have the ability to lift out and function as a spray hose. Some higher end kitchen faucets are now even touch activated. In regards to sinks, stainless steel also rules in this space. Gone are the days of heavy ceramic kitchen sinks.
