High Velocity Air Conditioning Systems

An Ideal Heating and Cooling System for Open Concept Homes

By Mark J. Donovan

High velocity air conditioning systems are a great alternative or supplement to existing conventional home air conditioning systems in certain applications. A home for example with large cathedral ceilings, or an open concept home can be difficult to heat or cool. Frequently the existing conventional home heating and cooling system is inadequate for these types of applications. Drafty rooms with uneven temperatures throughout the home are common in these types of house floor plans.

High velocity air conditioning systems, from companies such as SpacePak, are ideal for homes with inadequate heating and cooling systems, or for homes with limited space to run duct work. This type of air conditioning system uses small 2” insulated flexible tubing to transport high velocity heated or cooled air to various locations throughout the home. Because the flexible tubing is only 2” in diameter it can be routed in walls or inconspicuous locations to enable the interior of the home to maintain its architectural character.  The blower unit can be located in the home’s attic or crawl space. The actual outlets are approximately 3-4” in diameter and can be mounted in walls or ceilings.

High velocity air conditioning systems, such as SpacePak’s products, can be integrated into your existing home’s heating and cooling system and can operate in conjunction with an outdoor heat pump. In addition, they can operate off of standard ARI listed outdoor compressor/condenser units.

One concern with high velocity air conditioning systems is the threat of noisy air flow due to the fact that the air is traveling through the tubing at a high velocity.

Manufacturers of high velocity air conditioning systems, however, have addressed this issue by insulating the tubing for both condensation and noise concerns. As a matter of fact, two of the key advantages of high velocity air conditioning systems are that they are ultra quiet and provide draftless comfort.

High velocity air conditioning systems also have a couple of options that allow greater control and safety in the home. Some systems offer zone controls so that you can heat and cool specific areas of a home. Another option helps to purify the air as it circulates throughout the home. In addition, the flexible tubing is designed to be mold and mildew resistant.

Another unique feature of high velocity air conditioning systems is that they can remove more moisture from the air than conventional air conditioning systems without having to lower the thermostat. The results are a more comfortable room temperature, and lower energy bills.

So if you’re home is in need of improved heating and cooling, or if you are building a new home that has large open spaces or vaulted ceilings, look into a high velocity air conditioning system. They are ideal for retrofit applications, and can work in conjunction with, or in lieu of existing conventional HVAC systems.
