How to Fix Screen in Storm Door
Fixing a Screen in a Storm Door is a Breeze with
the Right Tool and Screen Material

Are you fed up with the hole in the screen on your storm
door? Are you tired of finding mosquitoes and other insects in your home due
to the tear in your screen door? If so, fear not, you can fix the screen in
your storm door yourself in about an hour, and for under ten dollars.
To repair a screen door all you need to do is get access to the rubber or
plastic spline that is holding the screen into the door frame. The spline is
the thin rubber like tubing that holds the screen into the door frame. |
It’s best to remove the storm door from the door frame and place it on a
large flat area. This way you can get easy access to the spline. This said, you
can remove the spline from the door while it’s still in the doorframe. It just
may take a little more effort to install the new screen cloth.
If you’re careful you can remove the spline all in one piece and can reuse it
later. Otherwise you will need to purchase new spline tubing as well as screen
cloth. After removing the spline, the screen can be simply lifted out of the
storm door.
|
|
Next, cut a new piece of screen cloth such that it is
approximately 2 to 3 inches longer and wider than the opening for the screen
in the door. Next, use a small spline install tool (a.k.a. spline roller) to
roll the spline back into place around the perimeter of the storm door. Be
careful when rolling the spline and screen into place so that you don’t rip
the new screen cloth. Also, be extra careful around the corners. You may
find it easier to cut the spline at the corner and to roll and trim the two
ends separately that feed into the corner. |
Once the spline has been installed use a utility knife to cut away the excess
screen material around the storm door frame. Make sure to not cut so close to
the spline with the utility knife that the screen slips out from under the
spline.
Finally, reinstall the storm door into the door frame to complete the screen
repair project.
