Poly Sand Compact
Polymeric Sand Will Ensure a More Durable Brick Paver Patio, Walkway or Driveway
By Mark J. Donovan

Poly sand compact, or Polymeric sand, is used in building concrete paver,
brick or stone patios, walkways and driveways. It is used to bind or
interlock the concrete paver, brick or stones together to produce a more
durable patio, walkway or driveway surface. Polymeric sand is brushed in
between the paver/brick joints and then watered down to activate the polymer
binder. Once activated the poly sand compact tightly interlocks the pavers
or bricks to prevent washout, insect damage and weed penetration.
|
|
Traditionally landscapers would sweep
torpedo or silica sand into the joints to interlock the pavers, bricks or
stones. In some cases a sealer was used to help hold the upper layer of sand in
place in between the joints and to prevent wash out, insect damage and weed
growth. However, most of these problems would still crop up over time,
particularly after a strong rain storm.
|
|
What makes Poly sand compact different and better is that it is comprised of
crystalline silica and quartz, along with a polymer ingredient. After the
poly sand compact is swept into the seams and activated with water it binds
the silica and quartz throughout the entire depth of interlocking material.
As a result, it creates a much more durable brick or paver walkway, patio or
driveway. In addition, it helps prevent water from filtering down underneath
the bricks, stones or pavers, and compromising and deforming the overall
integrity of the patio, walkway or driveway.
|
Consequently landscapers have been switching to polymeric sand to lock in
brick, pavers and stones. Though it costs quite a bit more than silica or
torpedo sand, landscape contractors end up saving time, money and hassles in
the end. One of the most common frustrations with landscape contractors is
having to run back and repair a freshly installed patio, walkway or driveway
due to a heavy rainstorm that shortly followed the installation and washed
out the joint sand.
|
As previously mentioned poly sand compact is pricey. Polymeric sand costs
approximately 3 times as much as silica or torpedo sand. However,
considering the fact how little is actually used to interlock the brick or
paver joints, it is minimal to the overall cost of the brick or paver
project and well worth the investment. The alternative to not using poly
sand compact is ultimately much higher and more frequent repair costs due
inevitably to rain water, ant and weed damage.

So the next time you’re installing your own paver or stone patio, walkway or
driveway, or are getting bids from landscape contractors on installing it for
you, consider using or asking about poly sand compact.
