Crawl Spaces
|
|
A
crawl space has advantages and disadvantages over a full basement or slab
foundation. Crawl spaces are notorious for causing moisture damage to the home
when not properly ventilated or insulated.
A crawl space is a
narrow area that sits between the ground and a home. For most homes, it is
enclosed with masonry walls and is an unfinished space that is vented to the
outside. A crawl space floor may have a concrete floor, but often it is left as
simply an earth floor. |
Frequently electrical wiring and plumbing pipes can be found in crawl spaces.
Historically crawl spaces have had a tendency to be dark, dirty, humid areas
that were breeding grounds for rodents, insects, mold, mildew and rot.
A crawl space, however, can be a useful space if properly vented or unvented,
and insulated correctly. Included in the articles and videos below are some
useful tips on how to create both drier and more useful crawl spaces.
